Therapeutic indications
Strongid is indicated for the treatment and control of parasites caused by: strongylus vulgaris, strongylus edentatus, strongylus equinus, cyatostomum spp. (trichonema spp.), Triodontophorus spp., Oxyuris spp., Parascaris spp., Anoplocephala perfoliata.
The product is also effective against strains of small strongyles resistant to benzimidazoles.
Dosage and administration
Strongid should be administered orally to horses, ponies and foals at least 8 weeks of age. It is not necessary to fast the animal before and after administration. The following method of administration is recommended:
1. Determine the weight of the animal to be treated as accurately as possible.
2. Position the measuring ring along the piston according to the weight of the subject.
3. Remove the cap from the syringe.
4. Deposit the paste on the back of the animal's tongue.
To do this, it is necessary to introduce the tip of the syringe through the labial commissure, direct the syringe towards the back of the oral cavity and press the piston.
By administering the product with this technique it is unlikely that it will be regurgitated. To make swallowing easier, lift the animal's head by placing a hand under the jaw.
The recommended dosage for the treatment and control of strongyles, pinworms and ascarids (excluding tapeworms) is 6.6 mg of pyrantel base per kg of body weight.
This dosage is achieved by administering the product according to the following scheme:
- Body weight: 301 - 600 kg; dose: contents of: 1 whole syringe; position of the measuring ring: 600 kg
- Body weight: 150 - 300 kg; dose: contents of: ½ syringe; position of the measuring ring: 300 kg.
The recommended dosage for the treatment and control of tapeworms (anoplocephala perfoliata) is 13.2 mg of pyrantel base per kg of body weight. (double dosage compared to that recommended for the treatment of strongyles).
This dosage is achieved by administering the product according to the following scheme:
- Body weight: up to 300 kg; dose: contents of: 1 whole syringe.
- Body weight: 301 to 600 kg; dose: contents of: 2 whole syringes.
If the environment where the animals live is such that reinfestation is likely, it is advisable to administer strongid every 4-6 weeks for best results.
Target species
Equines
