L'apparato respiratorio del cavallo è un sistema complesso deputato allo scambio di gas, ossigeno e anidride carbonica tra sangue e aria atmosferica. La sua funzione è vitale per la sopravvivenza delle cellule dell'organismo.
Le narici sono l'unico canale di scambio d'aria e anidride nel cavallo:la respirazione avviene solo tramite il naso.

Genericamente, un cavallo compie 10 - 14 atti respiratori al minuto, ma la frequenza respiratoria varia in base a razza, età, mole, sesso, gestazione, digestione e lavoro.
