Active ingredient: deltamethrin
Deltamethrin, the active ingredient contained in Beaphar Canishield®, is gradually released from the polymers of the collar matrix and transferred from the surface of the collar to the lipid layer of the animal's skin and fur. Deltamethrin is highly lipophilic, meaning it diffuses very rapidly through the superficial skin layers throughout the body.
Deltamethrin does not act systemically, which means it is not absorbed into the dog's bloodstream.
Deltamethrin is a second-generation pyrethroid; a synthetic compound similar to pyrethroids originally derived from extracts of the flower Chrysantèmum cinerariaefolium.
Deltamethrin is neurotoxic for arthropods, including ticks, fleas and sandflies, being absorbed through the cuticle of insects.
It thus invades the nervous system by binding to the sodium channels of the nervous membranes and modifying their permeability, causing depolarization and hyperexcitability.
This determines the so-called knock down and kill effect; the parasite is immediately paralyzed and becomes uncoordinated until death which occurs rapidly [1,2].
The active ingredient with absolute and prolonged effectiveness, continues to migrate from the collar matrix to the skin surface for its entire duration.

Protects dogs in the fight against parasites Ticks
Ticks are unwanted and dangerous parasites that affect both man and animals. The most common and widespread ticks in Europe mainly belong to the hard tick family (Ixodidae), such as Ixodes ricinus, Riphicefalus sanguineus and Dermacentor reticulatus. Ticks can transmit many infectious diseases to dogs and humans such as Borreliosis (Lyme Disease). These diseases are serious and can lead to death of infected hosts [3,4]. The tick bite also causes skin pain and local inflammation which requires veterinary consultation.
Fleas
The most common fleas that infest dogs in Europe belong to the Ctenocephalides felis species (cat flea). Most of the life cycle of fleas takes place in the environment and not on the dog.
For this reason, fleas can infest the dog wherever it is, through direct contact or through other animals. Once the flea has found its favorite host, for example the dog, it generally does not abandon it unless it is brushed or treated with a pesticide. Fleas feed on the dog's blood and this causes discomfort and itching. Massive infestations can cause anemia. Fleas produce saliva when they suck blood and this can give the dog an allergy known as flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) [5,6]. Furthermore, fleas are vectors of many human and animal pathogens and act as intermediate hosts of flatworms such as tapeworms.
Sandflies
Sandflies are small flying insects that attack a range of hosts including humans, dogs and other mammals.
Sandflies represent a real danger in areas with temperate climates because there is a high risk of transmission of deadly diseases. In the Mediterranean, the most common vector of Leishmaniasis is Phlebotomus perniciosus [7,8]. Beaphar Canishield is ideal for protecting dogs from sandflies.
