The Fit-aroma® of MONGE VETSOLUTION FELINE HEPATIC contains milk thistle. Silibinin, the active component of milk thistle seed extract, has numerous positive effects on liver function. In hepatocytes, silibinin destroys free radicals, inhibiting lipid peroxidation and counteracting liver inflammation and fibrosis. The anti-inflammatory properties of silibinin are due to DNA/RNA mediated effects. For the onset of liver fibrosis, the conversion of hepatic stellate cells into fibromyoblasts is crucial: this process is limited by silibinin through the interruption of cellular signaling. Silibinin decreases stellate cell DNA synthesis, proliferation and migration and limits the production of fibrous tissue. Silibinin also inhibits the absorption of other toxins by hepatocytes through polypeptides bound to the bile salts of the liver membrane. In hepatocytes, silibinin, a free radical antagonist, inhibits lipid peroxidation, supported by SOD, and counteracts inflammation and fibrosis. It was recently established that, in cats, the pharmacokinetics of silibinin combined with phosphatidylcholine are improved by approximately 7% due in part to the limited glucuronidation capacity in this species. Silibinin boasts a concentration in the enterohepatic circulation and in the bile almost one hundred times higher than the serum concentration. Pharmacokinetic studies have demonstrated the improved bioavailability of silibinin when associated with phosphatidylcholine, the active ingredient of Fit-aroma® in MONGE VETSOLUTION FELINE HEPATIC. The hepatoprotective effects of silibinin increase the protein synthesis necessary for liver regeneration.
