10% formaldehyde solution, ideal for preserving biological samples, disinfecting surfaces and instruments. Effective, safe and ready to use, it guarantees hygiene and reliable preservation.

Description

Formalin 10% is an aqueous solution of formaldehyde used for various applications, including the conservation of biological samples, the disinfection of surfaces and instruments, and the fixation of tissues in laboratory settings. Thanks to its high antimicrobial efficacy, Formalin 10% represents one of the most used substances in the medical, veterinary and biological fields to guarantee the long-term preservation of organic material. The product is packaged in a practical 10 liter container which allows prolonged use both in healthcare facilities and research laboratories. The pungent odor is characteristic of formaldehyde, which acts rapidly to block decomposition processes and destroy pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and molds. The solution is clear and colorless, ready to use, helping to precisely preserve the morphological details of the tissues, which is fundamental in histological analysis procedures. Formalin 10% therefore offers a reliable and versatile solution for the conservation and disinfection of biological material.

Therapeutic Indications

Formalin 10% is mainly used as a fixative for biological samples in histopathological diagnosis, guaranteeing the stabilization of the cellular structure and preventing morphological changes that could interfere with microscopic analysis. In addition to the medical field, the solution is used in veterinary medicine, for the preservation of organs, tissues and pathological samples intended for studies and tests. Furthermore, Formalin 10% is used as a disinfectant and sterilizing agent for non-porous surfaces, equipment and instruments thanks to its high antimicrobial efficacy. It can be used in the sanitization of laboratories, operating rooms and environments where rigorous hygiene is required. In the veterinary field, it is used for the disinfection of spaces, boxes, cages and animal shelters, especially in the presence of infectious diseases to limit the spread of pathogens. The solution is also suitable for the treatment of surface layers of soil, platforms and organic substrates that can act as a reservoir or vehicle for disease transmission. The versatility of use makes Formalin 10% an indispensable aid for numerous hygiene and conservation protocols in both the human and animal sectors.

Composition

Active ingredient: Formalin (aqueous solution of formaldehyde) 10%.
Excipients: purified water. The percentage of 10% refers to the content of formaldehyde released in the solution. This dosage is considered ideal for the fixation and preservation of biological samples, maintaining maximum biocidal capacity without irreparably altering the histological structures. The purity of the water used guarantees the absence of impurities that could interfere with the fixation process or lower the quality of preservation. Any contamination of the solution can compromise the entire fixation protocol: for this reason, the composition is subjected to rigorous quality controls. The absence of dyes and additives prevents unwanted interactions with tissues and with diagnostic tests following fixation.

Contraindications

Formalin 10% must not be used in subjects hypersensitive to formaldehyde, in the presence of open skin lesions, nor applied directly to living tissue. The use is contraindicated for the disinfection of instruments intended to come into direct contact with internal body cavities during procedures on living patients, unless it is followed by adequate and rigorous removal of residues through abundant rinsing. Inhalation of vapours, or prolonged contact with skin and mucous membranes, can cause serious irritation, allergic dermatitis and symptoms affecting the respiratory tract. Formaldehyde is classified among carcinogenic substances in humans; therefore, any exposure that is not strictly necessary must be avoided and its use must be reserved for correctly trained operators equipped with adequate personal protective equipment. Do not use the solution for uses other than those explicitly foreseen, such as the disinfection of food or surfaces intended for direct contact with food.

Safety of the drug for the species

The safety of use of Formalin 10% is guaranteed exclusively by respecting the methods of handling and application. It should not be used on live animals as a skin disinfectant or to manage wounds. If used during the conservation phases of animal samples, staff must avoid any direct contact with the solution and adopt masks, gloves and, where necessary, protective glasses. The vapors released from the solution can be irritating or toxic if inhaled or absorbed through the skin, especially for sensitive or small animals that may accidentally be exposed. In case of accidental contamination it is essential to immediately ventilate the room and wash abundantly the areas that have come into contact with the solution. Formalin should not be used near aquariums or tanks containing fish, amphibians or aquatic organisms as it is toxic even at low concentrations.

Precautions

When handling Formalin 10% it is mandatory to wear waterproof gloves, protective glasses and respiratory protection devices, especially in the absence of adequate localized extraction systems. Use the product only in well-ventilated environments or equipped with extractor hoods. Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing. In case of accidental skin or eye exposure, rinse with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes and consult a doctor if symptoms persist. Do not eat, drink or smoke in places where formalin is used. Keep the container tightly closed, away from heat sources, direct light, oxidizing products, acids and incompatible substances. Do not pour the formalin into unsuitable containers or those without adequate labelling. Keep out of reach of children, unauthorized personnel and animals. In case of accidental spills, absorb with inert materials and ventilate the environment. Dispose of residues in compliance with current regulations for hazardous waste.

Method of administration

Formalin 10% must be used as is for the immersion of biological samples that must be preserved or fixed for histopathological examinations. The finds must be completely immersed in the solution, preferably in an airtight container, in order to avoid evaporation and dispersion of vapors in the surrounding environment. During handling, staff must always use personal protective equipment, scrupulously complying with safety regulations. For the disinfection of surfaces or equipment not in contact with the mucous membranes, formalin can be distributed using a brush, sponge or low pressure sprayer, leaving it to act for at least 15-30 minutes before removing any residues by rinsing or prolonged aeration. Do not use formalin for inhalation, aerosolization or vaporization on animals.

Treatment program

The methods and frequency of use of Formalin 10% vary according to the purpose of use. In histological fixation protocols, the sample must remain immersed in the solution for a time varying between a few hours up to several days depending on the size and type of tissue. For the disinfection of environments and surfaces, the treatment must be repeated every time it is necessary to reduce the microbial load, taking into account the specific conditions and the presence of organic material. In farms and kennels, periodic sanitization using formalin helps maintain optimal hygienic conditions and reduce the epidemic risk, especially after episodes of contagion. Always ensure that areas are well ventilated after using formalin before reintroducing animals or people. Do not exceed quantities: a correct treatment program favors the safety and effectiveness of disinfection without exposing you to unnecessary risks.

Target species

Formalin 10% is intended exclusively for use on samples and biological materials of animal or human origin, for conservation and fixation, as well as for the disinfection of surfaces and environments frequented by animals. It must not be applied directly to live animals, nor used for in vivo therapeutic treatments. The fields of use include human and veterinary analysis laboratories, healthcare facilities, farms, kennels, catteries, veterinary clinics, research institutes, nature museums and all facilities where it is necessary to conserve or treat tissues, organs and organic material from animals. Use must always be limited to professional operators familiar with safety procedures and handling of dangerous chemical agents.
